A VICTORY FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

The health care reform bill isn't as strong or as sweeping as it should be. It doesn't set up anything like the single payer system that makes the most sense and would serve the American people most efficiently. It lacks a public option and makes far too many concessions to the insurance industry. But it is SO much more than has been offered before that we have to count it as a major victory both for President Obama and, more importantly, the American people. (The New York Times has the story here.) And the reaction to it has been fascinating. To hear the Radical Right talking, you would think America had just been taken over by Stalinists. (The Daily Kos has the Freepers' alternatively hilarious and disgusting foot stamping here.) But of the reactions I have read, I like Andrew Sullivan's the best :

Again, the real parallel is Ronald Reagan. People forget how unpopular Reagan was at the same point in his presidency — and passing a big tax cut was legislatively a lot easier than reforming a health sector the size of the British economy. But like Obama he persisted and, with luck and learning, aimed very high.

Obama has bet that this is his destiny. He is extremely cautious from day to day, staggeringly flexible on tactics, but not at all modest when you look at the big picture. He still wants to rebuild the American economy from the ground up, re-regulate Wall Street, withdraw from Iraq, win in Afghanistan, get universal health insurance and achieve a two-state solution in Israel/Palestine in his first term. That’s all. And although you can see many small failures on the way, and agonising slowness as well, you can also see he hasn’t dropped his determination to achieve it all.

BUSTED BIG TIME! CONSERVATIVE BLOGGER EXPOSES SEAN HANNITY FOR THE CROOK AND CON ARTIST THAT HE IS!

The damning evidence is here. It seems old "patriotic" Sean-boy has been SCAMMING MONEY from his so-called "Veterans Charity". The specific details are infuriating and sickening. Excerpts:

According to its 2006 tax returns, Freedom Alliance reported revenue of $10, 822, 785, but only $397,900–or a beyond-measly 3.68%–of that was given to the children of fallen troops as scholarships or as aid to severely injured soldiers.

On the other hand, 62% of the money went to “expenses,” including $979,485 for “consultants” and an “advisor.” Yes, consultant/advisors got more than double what injured troops and the kids of fallen troops got. The tax forms show that “New World Aviation” got paid $60,601 for “air travel.” Was that for Hannity’s G5? Like I said, neither the charity nor Hannity is talking. And finally, that year, Freedom Alliance spent $1,730,816 on postage and shipping and $1,414,215 on printing, for a total of $3,145,031, nearly half the revenue the charity spent that year and about eight times what the injured troops and the children of fallen ones received.

That’s especially heartbreaking when you compare the hundreds of thousands consultants got and the millions spent on printing and postage to the outrageously small amounts given to wounded soldiers. In 2006, Freedom Alliance gave only $1,000 to a soldier from Bay City, Michigan, whom the charity says was in the following condition:

Face was blown up and lost sight in one eye.

And that $1,000 was relatively generous, when you consider this soldier from Romulus, Michigan, whom Freedom Alliance only gave $200:

SM [serviceman] was involved in roadside bomb incident in Iraq, which caused loss of both legs and left arm.

Romulus is a mostly Black Detroit suburb, which is one of the poorest cities in Michigan and in America. Freedom Alliance gave this brave soldier roughly $67 per limb. That’s sickening.

So is the fact that this soldier, from Alexandria, Virginia, also only got $200 from Freedom Alliance:

SM was wounded in Iraq by an IED explosion. Lost right arm and severe shrapnel wounds to upper body and face.

Also appalling is the fact that in each year’s tax returns soldiers described as having brain trauma injuries, multiple amputated limbs, and severe burns over most of their bodies get a few hundred bucks each from Freedom Alliance and in almost every case, no more than $1,000.

That year, while fat-cat consultants and expenses took millions of Freedom Alliance’s money, seriously wounded troops to whom Freedom Alliance donated received a pathetic average of $785 each and the college student kids of the fallen got a paltry average of $2,943 toward tuition. Yes, out of millions raised that year by Sean Hannity at his Freedom Concerts, only $309,000 was given out in scholarships to 105 students, and only $110,703.82 was given to the wounded soldiers.

Freedom Alliance’s 2007 tax returns aren’t much better. Out of $12,459,317 it raised that year, only $895,347–or just 7%–went to seriously wounded troops and scholarships for fallen troops. 53% went to expenses, including $1,464,627 in postage and $1,151,428 in printing. $604,995 went to “professional fees” and “consultants.” Out of millions paid for Freedom Concert tickets and raised in fundraisers by Hannity listeners, only $596,500 went to college scholarships for soldiers who died in battle, and only $299,897 went to horribly injured troops. 208 student children of the fallen got an average of $2,868 apiece for tuition, though many got only $1,000 or less. 382 soldiers with serious injuries got an average of $785 each.

I have been saying it for years: Sean Hannity is a liar and a fraud, a disgusting right-wing con artist who lies as easily as most people breathe.
He dares to judge the loyalty of other Americans while betraying everything decent America stands for.

IS THERE A LOWER FORM OF LIFE THAN A PERSON WHO USES MONEY MEANT FOR DISABLED VETERANS FOR HIS OWN PERSONAL USES?

If the conservative media have ANY integrity, they will blow this son of a bitch Hannity out of the water once and for all.

Period.

Jon Stewart ANNIHILATES Glenn Beck

This is SO FREAKING BRILLIANT I had to share it with you, even though that makes two Jon Stewart videos in a row. Jon applies the kind of "reasoning" and "logic" that Glenn Beck uses (in his insane mental diarrhea) to analyze our current politics. This is an instant classic:

"Suck on That, Corporations!"

More unbelievable brilliance from Jon Stewart. (Hat Tip: old buddy and faithful reader Tom Englund.)

PASS THE HEALTH CARE BILL!!

Click on the link here and watch.

Watch especially the part starting at 50 seconds. You'll see several right-wing SCUM telling a man afflicted with Parkinson's disease that he won't get any "handouts" on their side of town. Watch the right-wing ASSHOLE who mockingly gives him $2 to "help". Listen to another right-wing ASSHOLE call him Communist--all because he supports a health care reform bill that might help him with his condition. Someone very close to me is afflicted with Parkinson's disease. Watching these conservative SCUM ridiculing this man PISSES ME OFF.

PASS THE BILL, IF ONLY TO STICK IT UP THE REAR ENDS OF THESE RIGHT WING BASTARDS.

G-d damn, am I mad.

Yes, the Vatican Has a Chief Exorcist

Details may be found here.

Quotes from the Chief Exorcist:

"When the possessed dribble and slobber, and need cleaning up, I do that too. Seeing people vomit doesn't bother me."

He also condemned the Harry Potter books, saying they were dangerous because they dabbled in the occult and failed to draw a clear distinction between "the Satanic art" of black magic and benevolent white magic.

And just for the record, there is indeed an Association of Exorcists.

The Republican War on the Middle Class

An astonishing post here that lays out in detail the Republican plan to pour unheard of new riches into the pockets of the wealthiest Americans and make the economic plight of the middle class even more desperate than it already is. Yes, since I am a rabidly Democratic partisan, you might think I'm exaggerating. I'm not. Let me post the most relevant sections of Steve Benen's item about Rep. Paul Ryan's tax proposals, or "roadmap":

As the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities explained today, the roadmap "calls for radical policy changes that would result in a massive transfer of resources from the broad majority of Americans to the nation's wealthiest individuals."

The Roadmap would give the most affluent households a new round of very large, costly tax cuts by reducing income tax rates on high-income households; eliminating income taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest; and abolishing the corporate income tax, the estate tax, and the alternative minimum tax.

At the same time, the Ryan plan would raise taxes for most middle-income families, privatize a substantial portion of Social Security, eliminate the tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance, end traditional Medicare and most of Medicaid, and terminate the Children's Health Insurance Program. The plan would replace these health programs with a system of vouchers whose value would erode over time and thus would purchase health insurance that would cover fewer health care services as the years went by.

An analysis by the Urban Institute-Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center found that the richest 1% of Americans -- those making more than $633,000 a year -- would find their tax burden cut in half in 2014. The more one makes, the bigger the cut -- millionaires who Republicans have already taken good care of would find their taxes cut even more dramatically, by hundreds of thousands of dollars
.

The congressional Republicans are simply declaring all-out war on America's vast middle class. The Radical Right is cozying up to the richest and most powerful in an even more shameless and blatant manner. And all of this won't even have an effect on the nation's indebtedness for years and years to come, if ever.

Spread the word. Spread this post. Get some action going on this. If the Democrats can take the offensive on this, maybe 2010 might not be so rough of an election year after all.

Bill Kristol an "Expert" on Iraq? UNF***ING BELIEVABLE.

Fox "News" personality (I refuse to say journalist) Chris Wallace yesterday referred to neoconservative warmongering chickenhawk William Kristol as an "expert" [sic] on Iraq. According to the link here, these are some examples of Kristol's "expertise":

September 19, 2002: Saddam Hussein was "past the finish line" in developing nuclear weapons.

February 20, 2003: "He's got weapons of mass destruction."

February 2003 (from his book, "The War Over Iraq"):

"The United States may need to occupy Iraq for some time. Though U.N., European and Arab forces will, as in Afghanistan, contribute troops, the principal responsibility will doubtless fall to the country that liberates Baghdad. According to one estimate, initially as many as 75,000 troops may be required to police the war's aftermath, at a cost of $16 billion a year. As other countries' forces arrive, and as Iraq rebuilds its economy and political system, that force could probably be drawn down to several thousand soldiers after a year or two."

(Reality check: The war has cost over a trillion dollars and 120,000 US troops remain there seven years later.)

February 24, 2003: "In retrospect, [the Bush administration] probably shouldn't have gone down the inspections route ... Doing so merely handed the Europeans and the U.N. — neither of them known for their dissatisfaction with Saddam's rule — a say in the process. The idea, of course, was to mollify them (as well as Colin Powell) and in the process hope that inspectors would stumble across a casus belli. But neither aim has been accomplished.

February 24, 2003: "Having defeated and then occupied Iraq, democratizing the country should not be too tall an order for the world's sole superpower."

March 1, 2003: "Very few wars in American history were prepared better or more thoroughly than this one by this president."

March 5, 2003: "We'll be vindicated when we discover the weapons of mass destruction."

April 1 2003: "On this issue of the Shia in Iraq, I think there’s been a certain amount of, frankly, Terry, a kind of pop sociology in America that, you know, somehow the Shia can’t get along with the Sunni and the Shia in Iraq just want to establish some kind of Islamic fundamentalist regime. There’s almost no evidence of that at all. Iraq’s always been very secular."

Kristol is a fraud down to his toenails, one of the very worst of the soft-spoken homicidal maniacs who casually call for the deaths of other people on a routine basis. To say Kristol has been wrong on virtually every foreign policy pronouncement he's ever made doesn't quite do the word "wrong" justice. Kristol has raised being idiotically wrong to a surrealist art form, a dimension of wrongness beyond the grasp of the ordinary person. And for his bloodthirsty ranting, his total and utter incompetence, and his genuinely shocking dishonesty, he has been promoted and lionized, especially by the Radical Right.

An "expert"? In what? Inflicting grief and suffering on countless other people? Yes, in that area Kristol is virtually without peer among the degenerate class known as the conservative punditry. In every other respect, he is a malicious fool, and a particularly malignant tumor on our unfortunate body politic.

But an "expert" on Iraq? Is that a joke?

Mitt Romney: Foreign Policy Knucklehead

The funny/scary details are here. Excerpt:

There are two salient global facts Romney never considers in his book. The first is that it is actually possible to obtain positive-sum relations with rising powers. The rise of China does not have to equal the decline of the United States. If, as Romney argues — following Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer — decline is a choice, so is permanent international competition. The concept of diplomacy is completely foreign to Romney. He dismisses the State Department as “assistant secretaries and… bureaucrats” and proposes designating regional relations to “one individual” who would become a “presidential envoy or the ambassador from CENTCOM or any of the other regional military commands.” Such an individual would “encourage people and politicians to adopt and abide by the principles of liberal democracy,” something that “would be ideal if other allied nations created similar regional positions, and if we coordinated our efforts with theirs.” That’s it for diplomacy, and he doesn’t have an agenda for global development. Why the world will simply do what America says simply because America says it is something Romney never bothers to consider. High school students at model U.N. conferences have proposed less ludicrous ideas.

And this babbling tough-guy wannabe is the BEST the Republicans have to offer in 2012. Hey, just put a nickel in Mitt and he'll regurgitate all the right-wing idiocy you want him to.

More (well-deserved) bashing of Romney to come. Much more.

John McCain to Be on a Sunday Talk Show for the TWENTIETH TIME Since November 2008

The absurd details are here.

What the hell is going on with the Washington press corps? Maybe they forgot that McCain lost by 9.5 million votes, and 365-173 electoral votes. He is NOT in the Republican Senate leadership and he has NOTHING new to say. Why, why, WHY, is he constantly given a platform for his ludicrous BS?

The Unbelievable Depths of Republican Health Care Dishonesty

Paul Krugman is on the case, big time, right here:

In reality, House Republicans don’t have anything to offer to Americans with troubled medical histories. On the contrary, their big idea — allowing unrestricted competition across state lines — would lead to a race to the bottom. The states with the weakest regulations — for example, those that allow insurance companies to deny coverage to victims of domestic violence — would set the standards for the nation as a whole. The result would be to afflict the afflicted, to make the lives of Americans with pre-existing conditions even harder.

Don’t take my word for it. Look at the Congressional Budget Office analysis of the House G.O.P. plan. That analysis is discreetly worded, with the budget office declaring somewhat obscurely that while the number of uninsured Americans wouldn’t change much, “the pool of people without health insurance would end up being less healthy, on average, than under current law.” But here’s the translation: While some people would gain insurance, the people losing insurance would be those who need it most. Under the Republican plan, the American health care system would become even more brutal than it is now.

So what did we learn from the summit? What I took away was the arrogance that the success of things like the death-panel smear has obviously engendered in Republican politicians. At this point they obviously believe that they can blandly make utterly misleading assertions, saying things that can be easily refuted, and pay no price. And they may well be right. [Emphasis added]

Pass. The. Friggin'. Bill. Screw the Republicans. Side with the American people, Democrats!!

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Sigh. It Still Doesn't Work. But That Never Stops Them.

Bruce Bartlett goes after the "starve the beast" philosophy of government here.

Americans need to make a fundamental choice. Do you want services? Pay taxes for them. Do you want lower taxes? Do with fewer services. You can't have a Medicare D drug benefit and two wars and lower taxes simultaneously and not have consequences

It's about that simple.

The American Taliban Strikes Again

This time they're moving to make having a miscarriage a potential crime.

No, you did not misread that. Excerpt:

A bill passed by the Utah House and Senate this week and waiting for the governor's signature, will make it a crime for a woman to have a miscarriage.... In addition to criminalizing an intentional attempt to induce a miscarriage or abortion, the bill also creates a standard that could make women legally responsible for miscarriages caused by "reckless" behavior. Using the legal standard of "reckless behavior" all a district attorney needs to show is that a woman behaved in a manner that is thought to cause miscarriage, even if she didn't intend to lose the pregnancy.

And of course, the American Taliban in the State Legislature gets to define "reckless behavior".

Monstrous. Barbaric. Right-Wing.

But I repeat myself.

Rich Lowry of National Review: Fool, Hypocrite, and Liar

Of course, fool, hypocrite, and liar can be said about so many conservative leaders, can't it? Little Richie is all upset about a forthcoming new book that (accurately) compares the Radical Right to the Islamic radicals. The outstanding Glenn Greeenwald chews Little Richie up and spits him out here. Excerpt:

I know it's not news that Rich Lowry is an intellectually dishonest hack. And I also know it's not news that the brain of right-wing authoritarians allows its host to blithely accuse others of exactly that which they do. Still, as common as it is, there are times when I'm amazed at how compartmentalized and self-blinding the human brain can be.

Shouldn't a normally functioning brain send a signal to Lowry along the lines of: "You can't complain that it makes someone an 'extremist' to compare 'the other side in the American political discussion' to Islamic radicals because one of your magazine's Senior Editors just recently wrote a book comparing liberals to Nazis, and another one of them wrote a book calling them the Party of Death? Forget intellectual honesty; just as a strategic matter, in order not to expose yourself as a wildly dishonest and hypocritical polemicist, shouldn't the brain intervene and at least tell the person that they should alter their criticisms so it's not blatantly attacking exactly what their closest comrades do? Yet somehow, the brain never sends that signal -- or it never gets received -- and people like Rich Lowry can sit there with a straight face and attack someone for doing exactly that which his own writers do, without any apparent recognition of that fact at all. If nothing else, it's a wonder to behold as a biological and psychological phenomenon
.

Heh heh heh.

The American Taliban: the Republican "Base"

The results of the Daily Kos poll of self-identified Republicans is here and the results are even more appalling than I had suspected. Here are some of the "highlights":

Should Barack Obama be impeached, or not?

Yes 39
No 32
Not Sure 29

Note that President Obama has committed no impeachable offense WHATSOEVER. It doesn't matter to these idiots. Only 32% think he definitely should not be thrown out of office immediately.

Do you believe Barack Obama was born in the United States, or not?

Yes 42
No 36
Not Sure 22

The spirit of the Birthers is strong. No matter how many times they have been shown the President's birth certificate, they will NEVER accept him as an American--never.

Do you believe Barack Obama wants the terrorists to win?

Yes 24
No 43
Not Sure 33

Yes, 24% believe something that is absolutely, certifiably insane, and 33% of the others might be insane.

Do you believe your state should secede from the United States?

Yes 23
No 58
Not Sure 19

Ahh, good old right-wing "patriotism". Things not going your way? Destroy the United States. When 42% of all self-identified Republicans say their state should or maybe should secede, then the Republican Party is a deeply sick, deeply twisted institution.

Read the rest of the responses, if you can stand to. They pretty much run in the same dreary, depressing vein. And these are the people who are very likely going to regain power in 2010 and 2012, because Democratic voters can't be bothered to actually vote when the chips are down.

This is what comes of 40 years of unceasing, non-stop right-wing hatred directed at government in general and the Democrats specifically. This is what comes out of the non-stop stream of vicious smears issuing forth from right-wing hate radio. This is what comes from a torrent of lying right-wing newspaper columns. This is what comes from Fox "News" blasting out Hate Obama propaganda 24/7. And this it what comes from right-wing, politicized churches whose preachers violate their pledge to not use their tax-free status to propagandize their congregations. The Republican base is rife with delusion, bigotry, hatred, and utter misinformation. The prospect of handing the country back to these people is deeply and profoundly disturbing, but it now seems more and more likely. You see, Barack Obama didn't clap his hands and magically make everything all better. So a lot of Democratic voters are going to stay home this year in protest.

And leave America to the creationists, the people who want to ban birth control and outlaw sex education, the people who think that all non-Christians are going to "hell", and the neo-Confederates.

And you wonder why I am in despair.

The Unspeakable Stupidity of Tim Pawlenty

His utterly idiotic "proposals" for the American economy can be seen here. His great ideas? Why, more tax cuts! And completely unspecified spending cuts! And killing health care reform!

Hey, why not? He's competing for the votes of the meanest, most morally indifferent electorate in the country--the Republican "base". Those people don't give a damn about America's problems. They just want to destroy President Obama. And Pawlenty is doing his level best to suck up to them.

I Want to Wage War. My "Leaders" Want to Surrender

So I guess after a mere eight months or so we don't want to go too fast on this health care reform, do we? This article in the New York Times makes it clear that not only will DINOs Blanche Lincoln and Evan Bayh oppose the use of reconciliation, Harry the Invertebrate Reid will yield to their opposition, because, after all, there's no rush. Lieberman wants to "reach out to the Republicans" and McConnell is crowing already that the bill is dead.

I want to fight. I want to side with courageous leadership in the battle to provide for the American people what the citizens of EVERY advanced industrial democracy enjoy: universal access to high quality health care.

I am ready to sacrifice and do battle for the well-being of my country.

Instead, my "leaders" in the Democratic Party cave in to and compromise with the Corporate Prostitutes and obedient servants of the insurance industry. While other Americans are dying from untreated illnesses, in terrible chronic pain because they cannot afford treatment, or losing everything because a catastrophic illness has wiped out their savings, our "leadership" looks for new ways to grovel and to debase itself. Our "leadership" is going to hand the Tea Party psychotics a HUGE victory, one which have terrible consequences. And people like me, and a lot of you, are wondering why we--the ones who love Barack Obama, the ones who gave our money, our time, our tears, and our sweat--seem only to get the back of our "leaders'" hands.

This whole episode has contributed to a crushing depression that has me in a vice-like grip. (And I'm not speaking metaphorically--I'm going to ask my doctor for a change in medication. Guess I should be happy that I HAVE a doctor.) Our impending defeat on health care--and make no mistake, it IS a defeat--will contribute to our losing control of both houses of Congress and the presidency by November 2012. Once again, the Democrats, with (on paper) huge majorities in both houses have fallen flat on their faces, just as they did in 1993-94. Once again the conservatives have outmaneuvered us, out-shouted us, out-lied us, and run rings around us. And the Right has done this with the aid of people that LBJ would have flattened in five minutes. You know when I knew we were in trouble? When Joe Lieberman was allowed to keep his chairmanships after defecating all over us repeatedly and campaigning for the Republicans in 2008. Now who the hell is going to have any fear of or respect for the power of President Obama when the Democrats won't even punish a back-stabbing, lying, two-faced son of a bitch like Holy Joe? Yes, that's when I smelled trouble.

And the trouble came.

Bill Kristol and his boys have won again. Sarah "Death Panels" Palin has won. Pathological liar Betsy McCaughey has won again. The Tea Party assholes who shouted down your Congressman in August have won. Boehner, McConnell, and Cantor have won. Fox "News" and Limbaugh and Beck and Hannity and Coulter have won. Dick Morris has won. And the tens of millions of Americans who desperately needed our help have lost.

I hereby formally predict that we will lose 6 Senate seats and 45 seats in the House in November. I hereby formally predict that a completely crippled Barack Obama will be unable to do anything decent in health care, environmental protection, financial regulatory reform, or immigration. I further predict that a Republican will be elected president 2012, and will lead this country, with the help of his or her majorities in Congress, into utter catastrophe.

I wanted to be part of a great army. Instead, I see cynical double-dealing and craven "compromises" that always, always, ALWAYS go only one way: against the interests of the American people.

I wanted to fight for America. I still do.

But my "leaders" know only surrender and submission.

And it's killing me.

War is the Health of the State

I have thought many times about the history of the terrible 20th century, especially the horrible toll in lives and suffering taken by wars. Certainly there were major conflicts in previous centuries that caused widespread death and destruction (such as the depredations of the Assyrians, the slaughters perpetrated by the Mongols, the Thirty Years' War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Chinese Civil War of the 1850s and 1860s), but the past century dwarfed anything previously seen. Moreover, we saw the rise of the phenomenon that military historian John Keegan called "Every Man a Soldier", the militarization of countless societies. I am interested in the both the causes and consequences of this phenomenon, and I've got some thoughts to share with you below. By the way, I am not a pacifist; war and preparation for war is sometimes necessary. But what do these states of preparation do to us?

The deepest and most ancient purpose of human society is mutual defense as a way of facilitating the survival both of one’s self and the group of which one is a part. We must suppose that our earliest ancestors, living on the unforgiving East African savannahs, evolved from primates whose very existence was predicated on their ability to defend themselves as a group, hence perpetuating the genes that made such survival possible in the first place. Mutual self-defense, therefore, is both genetically beneficial and self-reinforcing. The better a group is at defending itself from predators, rival groups, the Earth’s geological upheavals, the vagaries of climate, the ravages of disease, or simple random bad strokes of luck, the more likely it is that it will prosper sufficiently to have descendants. It is these descendants and their descendants, biological generation after biological generation, who will continue, elaborate, and perhaps spread the group’s distinctive way of life. This way of life will come to seem “natural”, “normal”, the way “real humans” live, and completely unique, perhaps even superior, in the minds of its members. The members of such a group will therefore find the group’s survival absolutely imperative. It will be imperative because its members, of course, will link their own personal survival and the survival of those with whom they are emotionally bound, to it. But it will be imperative also because the bulk of its members (not necessarily all) will see the group’s survival as desirable in and of itself. The group’s success will not only tend to guarantee personal safety; it will guarantee the continuance of a way of life that is considered right in the most basic sense.

The importance of the group’s survival is usually considered by its members to be so important that it trumps all other considerations. In times of intense threat or crisis, in order that the group might live, its leaders will usually take control of assets and resources that would in normal times be considered private property. The group’s leaders will try to organize the energies and labors of the group’s members to maximize the production of weapons, the organization, equipping, and transport of armed forces, and the production only of those commodities that are considered absolutely necessary to the group’s survival. The group’s members will usually find their freedom of expression, especially of dissent, to be severely or completely curtailed, lest dissident voices undermine the group’s willingness to endure the sacrifices and hardships which conflict necessarily entails. (Sometimes the suppression of dissent is imposed to prevent some of the group’s members from challenging the authority of those in positions of leadership, questioning the leaders’ motives, or criticizing the methods by which the leaders are conducting an intergroup conflict.)

Above all, the group will assert that certain of its members must be willing to put themselves “in harm’s way”, and, if required, sacrifice their lives or physical well-being in the defense of the group and its interests. The symbols of group identity, such as flags, the images of sacred animals, objects associated with the group’s past and heritage, or words which reflect the group’s “official” or aspirational identity, will tend to assume prominent places in the audiovisual environment of the group. The group’s enemies will, correspondingly, be presented in the worst light possible. The leaders of groups at war frequently find it useful to tell those over whom they have authority that their enemies are not only cruel, threatening, and evil, but less than human or “subhuman”. The dehumanization of the enemy spurs the group’s collective efforts onward, reaching into the brain’s most primitive and violent combinations of internal structures. Fighting an enemy literally considered to be non-human arouses deep feelings of hatred, disgust, loathing, fear, and determination to win at all costs. It also removes from the group’s combatants the sense of moral restraint that normally inhibits the infliction of physical harm on others.

In a war, the cause of group survival justifies, in the minds of many if not most of the group’s members, almost any action, up to and including the mass slaughter of helpless children. A group may work to minimize the infliction of violence on the non-combatants of an enemy group, but more often than not, it finds the infliction of hardship on them (such as hunger, the lack of necessary items for every day living, deprivation of medical care, and other difficulties) to be an unavoidable concomitant of destroying the group’s ability to wage war at all.

And in regard to an enemy group’s armed combatants, any tactic is usually considered fair game. Their heads may be caved in by heavy, blunt objects; their bodies may be pierced by sharp objects; their limbs or genitalia or heads or faces may be severed either by sharp objects or pieces of material emitted or thrown about by exploding objects; they can be subjected to burning or even total immolation by fire-causing or fire-emitting objects; they can be subjected to injuries caused by other humans striking them with hands or feet, or strangling them; they can be choked to death or burned by chemical weapons; their bodies may be evaporated by explosives; they may be drowned en masse; their bodies can be pierced or torn to shreds by high velocity projectiles. Always—always—enemy warriors are subjected to the absolute extremes of physical injury, physical suffering, and psychological trauma. The infliction of these horrors on others can be rationalized by the reasoning that these enemy warriors, if not stopped, would inflict those very same horrors on one’s own combatants, and if one’s own combatants were to be eliminated, the enemy would inflict these horrors on the group’s non-combatant population, or at the very least, threaten the non-combatant population so completely that the people of one’s group would be forced to surrender or submit. In the history of many groups of humans, surrender and submission are associated with an enemy inflicting mass murder, mass rape, torture, and enslavement on the group’s members, as well as the destruction of the group’s physical culture and the subordination of the group’s way of life to the enemy (or even the total eradication of one’s traditional way of life).

Thus, driven by the most basic animal fear and hatred, combined with the cerebral cortex’s ability to imagine the consequences of defeat, a group in conflict will generally be willing to do anything to destroy its opponents, even, if necessary, exterminating them utterly. And in order to accomplish these works of destruction, a group’s members will generally forego their own hopes and desires, and submit to those who are leading and organizing the sacred work of achieving group victory.

Naturally, given the inherent weaknesses of human intellect, and the operation of variables that are too numerous and complex in their manifestation for humans to deal with (and the operation of random chance above all), wars often take on a bumbling, error-laden character that, were the consequences of human violence not so terrible, would almost be humorous. Leaders make a host of mistakes in wartime; followers are often left adrift, or left to do what they are ordered without comprehending what they are being ordered to do. Human incompetence, invariably, makes an absolute mess out of almost every situation. But be that as it may, certain facts remain: in wartime, the power of a group’s government grows and the individual rights of the group’s members decline. The leadership and those who are immediately subordinate to it and who carry out, however fumblingly, its directives—what we tend to generalize by the use of the word State—gain tremendous freedom of action, power in its clearest form The leaders command the resources, attention, focus, energy, work, and well-being of those whom they govern.

And in societies that have been in conflict most frequently with others, the highest values are very often martial ones, just as they were in the era during which The Iliad was laid down on paper for the first time. Heroism in battle is considered by many to be the greatest individual achievement possible, either in saving the lives of one’s comrades, killing or capturing large numbers of enemy warriors, or some combination of the two. Individual greatness is therefore thought of in terms of service to the group, even though men in combat fight for each other, as the overwhelming evidence shows. The leaders of the government appropriate the heroism of their warriors for their own purposes, thus making those warriors’ sacrifices serve the State.

The legacy of wars is very often a government with permanently enhanced powers, permanently increased resources, and a government that appropriates the group’s history, its cultural heritage, and the heroism of its warriors. Hence the phrase, “War is the health of state”. In war, the leaders of a group gain life or death power over not only the group’s enemies, but the group’s own people. And very often in human history, once such powers have been acquired, they are never relinquished.

Right-Wing Commentator Peggy Noonan: Scott Brown Looks Like a "Real American"

The appalling conversation of which this remark was a part is right here.

You know, every so often, the Right-Wingers let their guards down and tell you what they really think. So, I thought I'd show you folks some of my ideas about what a Real American looks like:

Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers.

Hasidic Jewish boy, New York City

The late Barbara Jordan, Member of Congress, Constitutional scholar.

Tom Sakamoto, Veteran of World War II.

Oh, and Ms. Noonan--this man looks like a Real American, too.

Losers and Cowards Will Quit Now. I'M GOING TO WAR!

Well, it looks like so-called "Independent" Scott Brown has won a Senate seat in our most heavily Democratic state. Just for the record,

HE CAN GO TO HELL.

Screw him. The campaign to unseat this lying, Republican Tea Party son a bitch is starting NOW, and I'm starting it.

I will immediately pledge money to any worthy Democrat who announces for Brown's seat for the 2012 election. I'd like to see someone do it tomorrow. Oh, and by the way...

--Stop using the Republican Party's bullshit anti-HCR talking points.

--Start wrapping the Tea Party fanatics around the necks of these lying Republican bastards. Tell the voters the truth: if the Republicans win this year, the people who carry signs showing Barack Obama with a swastika win.

--Start wrapping Limbaugh and Robertson around the Republicans' necks too. Remind them that GOP Party Leader Limbaugh and GOP Patron Saint Robertson are the ones pissing all over the desperate, wounded people of Haiti.

--Start volunteering for your local Democrat NOW.

--Start contributing DIRECTLY to your local Democrat NOW. Screw the DNC and the DSCC. Give money right to your local party.

--Step up the war against the Radical Right in the Letters to the Editor, the on-line forums, and anywhere else you can. These cowards will back down if they're verbally slugged hard enough.

--Start building up your local party ASAP.

--Flush the Republicans out. DEMAND TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS THEY PLAN TO DO IF THEY WIN THIS YEAR.

Ask them--

If they plan to impeach President Obama.

Ask them if their plans include the following:

Outlawing abortion in all circumstances, even rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

Repealing the health care legislation, including provisions that forbid insurance companies from barring those with pre-existing conditions.

Launching an all-out preemptive war against Iran and Yemen.

Legalizing torture in all criminal interrogations. (Hey Scalia said it didn't violate the 8th Amendment!)

Outlawing all forms of birth control.

Declaring the United States a Christian Nation where non-Christians live only by permission of the Christian majority.

Calling for the death penalty or imprisonment for homosexuality. (Think I'm joking? Read the Oklahoma Republican Party platform if you can stomach it.)

Privatizing Social Security.

Ending Medicare and Medicaid.

Ratcheting up the "war on drugs" and outlawing all medical marijuana, even for the terminally ill.

Allowing for the State to intervene in end-of-life care.

Get these bastards on the freaking record. Put THEM on the G-d damned defensive.

--Ask the Republicans what they think of taxing the Bank Bonuses. Ask them how they intend to create jobs. Ask them what they're going to do about our crumbling infrastructure. Put them on the spot everywhere, every time.

As you can tell, I'm fucking mad. And I'm sick and tired of all the pissing and moaning by Democrats. Get yourselves off the G-d damned ground NOW. Get to work again NOW. Start giving the Republicans hell NOW. I don't give a shit if you think President Obama isn't living up to your G-d damn expectations. The Republicans in power would be a thousand times worse. So take your grief and turn it into anger. Take that anger and turn it into ACTION.

Scotty boy--kiss my ass. No congratulations to you. You will get nothing but all-out war from me, and anyone else with fighting spirit. You're DONE, boy. Count on it.

Remember what Winston Churchill said:

IN DEFEAT, DEFIANCE!

I'm going to war. Right fucking now.

Andrew Sullivan Speaks for Me Today

He doesn't always, but on the eve of a Republican winning the seat held by Ted Kennedy for 47 years, he sure does. Excerpt:

...any legislative moves with this Democratic party and this Republican party are close to hopeless. The Democrats are a clapped out, gut-free lobbyist machine. The Republicans are insane. The system is therefore paralyzed beyond repair.

Yes, I'm gloomy. Not because I was so wedded to this [health care] bill, although I think it's a decent enough start. But because if America cannot grapple with its deep and real problems after electing a new president with two majorities, then America's problems are too great for Americans to tackle.

And so one suspects that this is a profound moment in the now accelerating decline of this country. And one of the major parties is ecstatic about it.

HELP THE PEOPLE OF HAITI NOW!!

The horrible disaster that struck Haiti may have killed ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND people. Many, many more are injured, homeless, and desperate. Huffington Post has an excellent page here that has links to all kinds of organizations where you can donate help.

Oh, and Rush Limbaugh's first reaction? To try to politicize the disaster and use it as a vehicle to attack President Obama. It's right here if you can stand to listen to this disgusting, bloated, drug-addicted asshole. Give money to Haiti for two reasons:

1. The Haitian people desperately need it.
2. To stick it up Limbaugh's ass.

Glenn Greenwald at His Brutal, Savage Best

His take-down of our disgusting, tabloid-level Washington media is a gem of ferocity, as Greenwald studies the reception by our "journalists" of Mark Halperin's latest "book". Excerpt:

This reaction has nicely illuminated what our press corps is. The book is little more than royal court gossip, churned out by the leading practitioner of painfully sycophantic, Drudge-mimicking cattiness: Time's Mark Halperin. And all of the courtiers, courtesans, court spokespeople (i.e., "journalists") and hangers-on who populate our decadent little Versailles on the Potomac can barely contain their glee over the opportunity to revel in this self-absorbed sleaze. Virtually every "political news" TV show is hyping it. D.C. reporters are boasting that they obtained early previews and are excitedly touting how intensively they're studying its pages in order to identify the most crucial revelations. Just try to contemplate how things would be if even a fraction of this media energy and interest level were devoted to scrutinizing the non-trivial things political leaders do.

Read the whole thing, friends.

ALERT: Radical Right Wing Lunatics Gain Control of Texas Schoolbook Policies

The whole disturbing story is here. And why does this matter? Because Texas acquires its textbooks on a statewide level, and textbook publishers bend to the state's wishes. Right-wing radicals are using the process to attack the teaching of evolution, destroy the separation of church and state, make a hero out of Joe McCarthy (whose most vicious attack was against Gen. George C. Marshall), ignore the civil rights movement, and basically indoctrinate kids with right wing lies and propaganda. As a former teacher, I care deeply about such matters, and we need to be heard on this matter. Texas helps set the NATIONAL standard about what will be taught. These Right-wing psychopaths and religious fanatics want to tell your children lies. In the name of truth and sanity, we need to fight them. I urge you in the strongest terms to do so.

The Rapture-Obsessed Sarah Palin

Does Sarah Palin believe the Apocalypse is near? Based on her remarks that Jews would soon be "flocking" to Israel in the days, weeks, and months to come, it's a possibility. Jeffrey Goldberg interviewed an evangelical scholar from Liberty University named Thomas Ice about the matter. Excerpt:

"Over forty percent of the world's Jews now live in Israel. What Sarah Palin probably believes is that this is the first regathering," when the Jews all migrate to Israel. "This is a condition for the second regathering, the regathering in belief, when the Jewish nation is converted. Then there will be the battle of Armageddon, because remember, Satan wants to wipe out the Jews to prevent the Second Coming, but Jesus comes to rescue the beleaguered Jews. We believe that the Jews are going to be converted so that they can call on Jesus to rescue them from Satan." [Emphasis added.]

Yes, the Jews will convert or die. And the time when the Jews will have to convert or die may be just around the corner.

Battle of Armageddon. The Apocalypse. The Tribulation.

And a lot of Republicans want Sarah Palin to have control of America's nuclear arsenal.

Draw your own conclusions.

The Colossal Failure of Bush-Cheney Economics

The WORST economic performance since the Great Depression.

The WORST job growth.

An actual DROP in net household worth.

A sheer, unmitigated disaster from every standpoint, the consequences of conservative economic policies of deregulation and shifting wealth toward the upper class.

And notice, by the way, the superiority of the performance of the economy under Clinton over the economy under Reagan. Just for the record.

And it is the supporters of the disastrous Bush-Cheney years that want to return to power this year.

Consider yourself warned.

The Best Psychotic Right-Wing Quotes from 2009: House Version

My favorite is by Michele Bachmann:

What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing [health care]...We are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom. And we may never be able to restore it if we don't man up.

So...what are you waiting for, Michele?

Who Gives a Damn What Gingrich Thinks?

Evidently, Meet the Press does.

The question is: why??

They Will Lie About Absolutely ANYTHING

Republican hack and propagandist Mary Matalin now is claiming that the 9/11 attacks occurred under Bill Clinton. She also tells a ludicrous falsehood about the economy under Bush.

But then again, Matalin did work for Cheney, so she's used to lying through her teeth as naturally as breathing.

Michele Bachmann: Marxist Hater of Freedom!!!

The typical story of right-wing hypocrisy can be found here. Excerpt:

But data compiled from federal records by Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit watchdog that tracks the recipients of agricultural subsidies in the United States, shows that Bachmann has an inner Marxist that is perfectly at ease with profiting from taxpayer largesse. According to the organization’s records, Bachmann’s family farm received $251,973 in federal subsidies between 1995 and 2006. The farm had been managed by Bachmann’s recently deceased father-in-law and took in roughly $20,000 in 2006 and $28,000 in 2005, with the bulk of the subsidies going to dairy and corn. Both dairy and corn are heavily subsidized—or “socialized”—businesses in America (in 2005 alone, Washington spent $4.8 billion propping up corn prices) and are subject to strict government price controls. These subsidies are at the heart of America’s bizarre planned agricultural economy and as far away from Michele Bachmann’s free-market dream world as Cuba’s free medical system. If American farms such as hers were forced to compete in the global free market, they would collapse.

Are you really surprised?

Yes! A Million Times Over, Yes!

Know Your Enemies: The Koch Brothers

Two right wing billionaires who are helping to bankroll the Radical Right's opposition to the our agenda. Excerpts:

Billionaires David and Charles Koch have been financial leaders in opposing anything that resembles a progressive agenda for years. They have been looming in the background of every major domestic policy dispute this year, and may be the most effective opponents of President Obama's policies. For example, as health care reform protesters descended upon Washington last month, few were aware, as they were greeted with dough nuts and coffee, and handed protest signs and talking points about socialized medicine, that a right-wing billionaire had paid for the meals, buses, or salaries of the helpful guides...

Koch’s hidden presence in the health care debate illustrates the extent to which the right-wing is creating, and then hiding behind, a grassroots fervor of middle-class opponents of health reform.

The AFP, founded in 1984 by David and managed day to day by the astroturf lobbyist Tim Phillips, has spent much of the year mobilizing "tea party" opposition to health reform, clean energy legislation, and financial regulations. According to an article written by a compilation of authors for Think Progress, over the years, millions of dollars in Koch money has flowed to various right-wing think tanks, front groups, and publications. At the dawn of the Obama presidency, Koch groups quickly maneuvered to try to stop his first piece of signature legislation: the stimulus. The Koch-funded group "No Stimulus" launched television and radio ads deriding the recovery package as simply "pork" spending...

Much of the fierce opposition to health reform can be credited to Koch organizations. As the health care debate began, AFP created a front group, known as Patients United, that dedicated itself to attacking Democratic health care reform proposals. The Koch brothers clearly have a financial stake in blocking reform. Koch Industry oil refineries are major carbon dioxide polluters, and George-Pacific, a Koch Industries timber subsidiary, is one of the largest contributors to the loss of carbon-sink capacity.

According to the EPA, Koch Industries is responsible for over 300 oil spills in the U.S. and has leaked three million gallons of crude oil into fisheries and drinking waters. So there are clear economic interests in why the Koch brothers would want to block regulatory enforcement, clean energy, labor, and other reforms. But part of their opposition stems from a long family tradition of funding conservative movements to shift the country to the far right.

Yes, the conservative slogan is still the same, year after year:

"I've got mine, screw you."

Michael Lind NAILS It!

A letter from "your" Congressman to you.

Sucker.

Paul Krugman Again Tells the Truth--The Conservatives Lie Constantly About the Meltdown

He lays it out straight and true right here. Excerpt:

Talk to conservatives about the financial crisis and you enter an alternative, bizarro universe in which government bureaucrats, not greedy bankers, caused the meltdown. It’s a universe in which government-sponsored lending agencies triggered the crisis, even though private lenders actually made the vast majority of subprime loans. It’s a universe in which regulators coerced bankers into making loans to unqualified borrowers, even though only one of the top 25 subprime lenders was subject to the regulations in question.

Oh, and conservatives simply ignore the catastrophe in commercial real estate: in their universe the only bad loans were those made to poor people and members of minority groups, because bad loans to developers of shopping malls and office towers don’t fit the narrative.

In part, the prevalence of this narrative reflects the principle enunciated by Upton Sinclair: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” As Democrats have pointed out, three days before the House vote on banking reform Republican leaders met with more than 100 financial-industry lobbyists to coordinate strategies. But it also reflects the extent to which the modern Republican Party is committed to a bankrupt ideology, one that won’t let it face up to the reality of what happened to the U.S. economy.

Read the whole thing. It's worth it.

On Foreign Policy, McCain Isn't an "Expert"--He's an Idiot

Take a look at the details here. And let me emphasize the central quote from the posting, from Frank Rich back in September:

To appreciate this crowd's [The Neocon War Fanatics] spotless record of failure, consider its noisiest standard-bearer, John McCain. He made every wrong judgment call that could be made after 9/11. It's not just that he echoed the Bush administration's constant innuendos that Iraq collaborated with Al Qaeda's attack on America. Or that he hyped the faulty W.M.D. evidence to the hysterical extreme of fingering Iraq for the anthrax attacks in Washington. Or that he promised we would win the Iraq war "easily." Or that he predicted that the Sunnis and the Shiites would "probably get along" in post-Saddam Iraq because there was "not a history of clashes" between them.

What's more mortifying still is that McCain was just as wrong about Afghanistan and Pakistan. He routinely minimized or dismissed the growing threats in both countries over the past six years, lest they draw American resources away from his pet crusade in Iraq.

Two years after 9/11 he was claiming that we could "in the long term" somehow "muddle through" in Afghanistan. (He now has the chutzpah to accuse President Obama of wanting to "muddle through" there.) Even after the insurgency accelerated in Afghanistan in 2005, McCain was still bragging about the "remarkable success" of that prematurely abandoned war. In 2007, some 15 months after the Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf signed a phony "truce" ceding territory on the Afghanistan border to terrorists, McCain gave Musharraf a thumb's up. As a presidential candidate in the summer of 2008, McCain cared so little about Afghanistan it didn't even merit a mention among the national security planks on his campaign Web site. He takes no responsibility for any of this. [...]

Along with his tribunes in Congress and the punditocracy, Wrong-Way McCain still presumes to give America its marching orders. With his Senate brethren in the Three Amigos, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, he took to The Wall Street Journal's op-ed page to assert that "we have no choice" but to go all-in on Afghanistan -- rightly or wrongly, presumably -- just as we had in Iraq. Why? "The U.S. walked away from Afghanistan once before, following the Soviet collapse," they wrote. "The result was 9/11. We must not make that mistake again."

This shameless argument assumes -- perhaps correctly -- that no one in this country remembers anything.

Neocon Amateur Krauthammer Upset That Obama Isn't More Enthusiastic About Killing Brown People

The gruesome details are here.

Short Takes

*When on earth did Tiger Woods' personal problems become anyone else's business? Since when does he owe anyone an explanation for his private behavior? Why do so many people think they have the right to know intimate details of his life that are none of their concern? Celebrities are not our property; we don't own them, we don't have any right to know about their lives at home, and they owe us absolutely nothing. A lot of Americans can't seem to grasp these facts.

*And speaking of celebrities, anyone who obsesses about the weight, clothing, hairstyles, or dating lives of famous people is fit for little else intellectually than reading Us and People magazines. People who are morbidly interested in such things are wasting their lives and their minds, in my humble opinion. Then again, these people may have such humdrum and ordinary lives that they must lose themselves in the lives of others. That's even sadder.

*John McCain has been on the major Sunday talk shows repeatedly since he lost the 2008 election by 9.5 million votes and an electoral vote of 365-173. Why? He has proposed no major legislation, he isn't part of the Republican Senate leadership, and his responses to almost any question are tiresomely predictable. Why is he given a platform so often?

*For that matter, as I have said, who really gives a damn what a pathetic, know-nothing amateur like Charles Krauthammer thinks about foreign policy? That the brilliant and insightful Juan Cole, who actually speaks four different Middle Eastern/South Asian languages and is deeply knowledgeable about the Middle East, is heard far less often than a neocon fanatic like Krauthammer, is a damning indictment of our so-called "mainstream" media.

*Salon employs both the brilliant and invaluable Glenn Greenwald and the wretched, demented Camille Paglia. What kind of corporate thinking is reflected in this? I won't be giving a cent to Salon as long as they give Paglia an outlet for her Limbaugh worship, her Obama bashing, and her non-stop lies and distortions. Period.

*If I believed in karma, I would consider it karmic justice that the horrible, pathologically selfish Ayn Rand died of lung cancer because she refused to believe government-issued warnings about the danger of smoking. Gee, what a shame.

*Those who believe in the "Magic of the Free Market" should check out the story of how George Steinbrenner, perhaps the richest owner in all of sports, got the city of New York's taxpayers to finance his grotesque new stadium. Look at it here. Again, for the hundredth time: there is no free market in America. There is a rigged market in which the rich and powerful manipulate the law to benefit themselves. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get their head out of the Dreamworld.

*President Obama said withdrawal from Afghanistan would start in July 2011 contingent on conditions on the ground at that time. The Right Wing Eternal War Machine has ignored that part and is saying that the President is "comforting" our enemies by "setting a deadline". Are the people who hurl this filth simply: A. Inattentive B. Insanely hostile to anything Barack Obama proposes C. Stupid D. Some gruesome combination of all of the above?

*For all you Democrats and Independents who lean Democratic who don't feel like voting in 2010, remember this: if you don't vote, you're handing America back to the people who wave signs with swastikas and Barack Obama's picture on them. You're handing America to the Sarah Palin fan club. You're handing our nation over to religious fanatics who hate everything our Constitution stands for and who consider you a class of anti-American subhumans. You're turning America over to the sickest, most malicious political opposition I have seen in my entire lifetime. Can you really live with that? Remember: the Perfect is the Enemy of the Good. President Obama isn't perfect by a long shot, but ask yourself this: which America do you want--Barack Obama's or Glenn Beck's?
